The UK Moves Towards Full Digital Immigration Status
As part of the UK Government’s strategy to digitise its immigration system, a significant change will take effect from 15 July 2025. Applicants for UK Study Visas and Work Visas, as main applicants, will no longer be issued a physical visa vignette in their passports. Instead, they will be required to create a UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) account and access their immigration status via a secure eVisa before travelling to the United Kingdom.
What Is an eVisa?
An eVisa is a digital confirmation of an individual’s immigration status, securely linked to their passport. This replaces the need for physical documentation such as the visa vignette or, eventually, the Biometric Residence Permit (BRP).
Who Will Be Affected?
From 15 July 2025, the following changes will apply:
- Main applicants for Study Visas and Work Visas will not receive a visa vignette.
- These applicants must create a UKVI account and access their eVisa digitally.
- Applicants who will continue to receive a vignette include:
- Dependants of visa applicants
- Main applicants for other visa categories, such as Family Visas or Ancestry Visas
Why Is the UK Making This Change?
The transition to a digital immigration system aims to:
- Streamline the application and entry process
- Improve security and data accuracy
- Provide individuals with a more flexible and user-friendly method of managing their status
What Applicants Need to Do
If applying for a Study or Work Visa on or after 15 July 2025, applicants must:
- Create a UKVI account during the application process
- Access and activate their eVisa via this account
- Ensure their account is linked to the passport they will travel with
- Travel to the UK using the passport and digital status
