British Citizenship Priority Service Introduced: What the Home Office’s New Guidance Means for Applicants

Planning to apply for British citizenship? The Home Office has introduced an important change that could benefit applicants who need a faster decision on their nationality application.

On 2 July 2026, the Home Office published updated guidance confirming the introduction of a Priority Service for British nationality applications, providing eligible applicants with the opportunity to receive a faster decision for an additional fee.

Whether this service is suitable for you will depend on your individual circumstances and the urgency of your application.

What is the British Citizenship Priority Service?

The new Priority Service allows applicants submitting certain British nationality applications to request expedited processing by paying an additional Home Office fee of £500.

According to the Home Office, applicants using the Priority Service should normally expect a decision within 30 working days after providing their biometric information. However, this is not a guaranteed timeframe.

Applications requiring additional investigation, identity verification, national security checks or enhanced scrutiny may still take longer.

Can You Upgrade an Existing Application?

No.

One of the most significant points clarified in the updated guidance is that applications already submitted cannot later be upgraded to the Priority Service.

If you think you may require a faster decision, this should be considered before your application is submitted, as the Priority Service must be selected during the application process.

Does Everyone Qualify?

The Priority Service is available for eligible nationality applications, but paying the additional fee does not guarantee approval of your application.

Your application will still undergo exactly the same legal assessment as a standard application. The only difference is the processing priority.

Applicants with complex immigration histories or applications requiring additional enquiries may still experience longer processing times.

Applicants should also be aware that paying for the Priority Service does not necessarily mean the additional £500 fee will be refunded if the Home Office is unable to decide the application within the published 30-working-day target.

If the Home Office is unable to meet the published processing target because an application is particularly complex or requires further enquiries or additional evidence, the priority fee will generally not be refunded.

Applicants should therefore consider the Priority Service as an opportunity for faster processing where possible, rather than a guarantee of a decision within a fixed timeframe.

What About Compassionate or Exceptional Cases?

The updated guidance also confirms that the Home Office will continue to consider requests for priority treatment outside the paid Priority Service in genuinely exceptional circumstances.

Examples may include:

  • Administrative errors made by the Home Office.
  • Urgent compassionate circumstances.
  • Certain employment requirements where British citizenship is essential.
  • Applicants representing the United Kingdom internationally.
  • Situations involving the national interest.
  • Certain ministerial requests.

These requests are assessed individually and supporting evidence will usually be required.

Is the Priority Service Worth It?

For some applicants, paying an additional £500 may be worthwhile if obtaining British citizenship quickly is important for:

  • Employment opportunities.
  • Personal or family circumstances.
  • Time-sensitive legal or administrative requirements.

However, if your application is not time-critical, the standard application process remains available.

It is possible to travel outside the UK while a nationality application is pending. However, British citizens need a British passport or a Certificate of Entitlement to enter the UK.

A certificate of naturalisation or registration will not be accepted as proof of citizenship for travel purposes.

Why Professional Advice Still Matters

Choosing the correct nationality route remains far more important than selecting a faster processing option.

British nationality law can be highly technical, particularly where applications involve:

  • Citizenship by descent.
  • Registration as a British citizen.
  • Naturalisation.
  • Historic nationality claims.
  • Previous immigration issues.
  • Complex residence histories.

An incorrectly prepared application may still be refused, regardless of whether it is submitted through the Priority Service.

At Breytenbachs Immigration Consultants, we assist clients worldwide in preparing British nationality applications and determining the most appropriate route based on their individual circumstances.
