REGISTERING AS A BRITISH CITIZEN IF YOU ARE AN IRISH CITIZEN

Irish citizen living in the UK? Discover how you can register as a British citizen through a simplified route. Breytenbachs offers expert guidance every step of the way.

Irish citizens living in the United Kingdom may be eligible to register as British citizens under a unique route that differs from standard naturalisation. If you meet the residence and character requirements, this pathway offers a simplified process to become a British citizen.

Who can register?

As an Irish citizen, you may be eligible to register as a British citizen if you meet the following criteria:

  • You have resided lawfully in the UK for at least five continuous years before the date your application is received.
  • You were physically present in the UK exactly five years before the Home Office receives your application.
  • You are of good character, meaning you have complied with UK laws and respected the rights and freedoms of others.
  • You have not breached UK immigration laws during your time in the UK.

This registration route is specifically available to Irish nationals and differs from the naturalisation process used by most other foreign nationals.

Residence and absence limits

You must demonstrate that you have been resident in the UK for a continuous five-year period before applying. In addition:

  • You must not have spent more than 450 days outside the UK during the five-year period.
  • You must not have spent more than 90 days outside the UK in the 12 months immediately before your application.

Time spent in the UK in certain diplomatic or military capacities does not count towards your qualifying residency period.

Your application may be refused if you were not physically in the UK on the exact date five years prior to submission—unless exceptional circumstances apply (e.g., travel bans, illness, or a revoked removal order).

Application Fees

  • Adults: £853 (this includes the £130 citizenship ceremony fee).
  • Children under 18: £607 per child.
  • If a child turns 18 during the process, an additional £130 is payable for the citizenship ceremony.

A fee waiver may be available for applicants under 18 who are unable to afford the cost. Our team can assess whether you or your family members may qualify.

Applying for Children

Children do not automatically become British citizens when a parent registers. Each child must submit a separate application, and eligibility is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

In certain circumstances, children may be registered under section 4(2), depending on parental status, residence history, and other criteria. Breytenbachs can advise families on whether their children meet the requirements and the most appropriate route.

Mental Capacity and Representation

Applicants must be of sound mind, meaning they are capable of understanding the implications of becoming a British citizen. If this is not the case, someone responsible for the applicant may apply on their behalf. Evidence of the applicant’s condition and the relationship with the caregiver should be submitted with the application.

Use a Regulated Immigration Adviser

Only advisers who are properly regulated or legally qualified may provide immigration or nationality advice in the UK. It is a criminal offence to offer such services without authorisation.

Breytenbachs Immigration Consultants is registered with the Immigration Advisers Authority (IAA) and fully authorised to provide legal advice on UK immigration and British nationality matters.

What to expect after you apply

Applications are usually processed within six months. Once approved, you will attend a citizenship ceremony and receive a certificate of British citizenship.

After you receive your certificate

You will be eligible to apply for a British passport and may continue to use your Irish passport or Irish passport card. If you hold a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), you must return it to the Home Office within five working days of receiving your certificate.
