Completing your journey to British citizenship is an exciting milestone, and your citizenship ceremony is the final step. This formal event is where you officially pledge your loyalty to the United Kingdom and receive your certificate of British citizenship. Here’s a detailed guide to help you understand what to expect and how to prepare.
Who Needs to Attend a Citizenship Ceremony?
If you are 18 or over and have successfully applied to become a British citizen, you must attend a citizenship ceremony.
–Windrush Scheme Applicants: If you are becoming a British citizen under the Windrush scheme, attending a ceremony is optional, and no fee is required.
–Exceptions: Individuals registering as a British Overseas Territories citizen, British overseas citizen, or British subject do not need to attend a ceremony but must still make an oath or affirmation of allegiance.
Booking Your Ceremony
-Your local authority will arrange the ceremony, and it’s typically conducted in a group setting.
-You can request a private ceremony, though additional fees may apply—check with your local authority for costs.
-You must book your ceremony within 3 months of receiving your invitation from the Home Office.
What Happens at the Ceremony?
During the ceremony, you’ll make a formal promise to His Majesty the King and the United Kingdom by saying the Oath of Allegiance or the Affirmation of Allegiance and the Pledge of Loyalty.
Oath of Allegiance
“I, (name), swear by Almighty God that, on becoming a British citizen, I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles III, his Heirs and Successors, according to law.”
Affirmation of Allegiance
“I, (name), do solemnly, sincerely, and truly declare and affirm that, on becoming a British citizen, I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to His Majesty King Charles III, his Heirs and Successors, according to law.”
Pledge of Loyalty
“I will give my loyalty to the United Kingdom and respect its rights and freedoms. I will uphold its democratic values. I will observe its laws faithfully and fulfil my duties and obligations as a British citizen.”
You can make the Oath or Affirmation and Pledge in English or Welsh.
Tips for the Ceremony
-Practise the Oath and Pledge beforehand, but don’t worry—it’s not a memory test! Cards with the words will be provided at the ceremony, and the officiant will guide you through it.
-If making the Oath of Allegiance, you may bring a holy book if you wish.
After the Oath and Pledge
Once you’ve completed the Oath and Pledge, you’ll receive:
-Your certificate of British citizenship.
-A welcome pack.
Some local authorities may offer photographs or videos of the ceremony for purchase.
Cost of Citizenship Ceremonies
-The cost of your ceremony is included in the citizenship application fee.
-Private ceremonies may incur additional charges—confirm the cost with your local authority.
Special Circumstances
–Living Abroad: If you’re outside the UK, you may be able to attend the ceremony at a British embassy or consulate. However, if you applied for citizenship in the UK, then the ceremony will be in the UK.
–Temporary Absence: If you’re abroad temporarily, you may need to postpone your ceremony until your return.
