Indefinite leave to remain or ILR is the expression confirming the fact that there is no limit to the leave period you can stay in the UK. This is also often referred to as permanent residence. This status is granted to a person on the basis that they are settled in the UK.
It is also a stepping stone to obtaining British citizenship.
To many, obtaining British citizenship is the ultimate immigration goal and dream. There are of course many advantages to obtaining British citizenship, which include; unrestricted entry to the UK, no work restrictions, receiving a British passport and enjoying the same benefits as a person born as a British citizen!
Furthermore, obtaining British citizenship does not necessarily mean that you have to forfeit your current citizenship, as many countries allow their citizens to have dual citizenship.
In terms of the regulations of the Points Based Immigration system, all UK employers need a Sponsorship Licence in order to retain employees whose work permits are due for renewal, or employ non-EU nationals under the Tier 2 system.

It is important that South African citizens obtain the necessary permission from the SA authorities, before obtaining UK citizenship. This way their SA citizenship is protected and they are able to hold dual citizenship.
However, if you are unsure or concerned that you have lost your South African citizenship, it is possible to do a determination of your SA nationality status, with the assistance of BIC.
