The Youth Mobility Visa

The Youth Mobility Visa is a popular option for individuals aged 18–30 (or up to 35 for some nationalities) seeking work and travel opportunities in the UK.

Here’s a breakdown of the primary requirements:

1.Nationality Requirements

Eligibility for the Youth Mobility Visa is strictly limited to specific nationalities as outlined in the UK’s immigration rules. Applicants must either:

  • Be a British Overseas Citizen, British Overseas Territories Citizen, or British National (Overseas), OR
  • Hold a passport from one of the eligible countries listed under the Youth Mobility Scheme.

Participating Countries and Annual Quotas

Each eligible country has an annual cap on the number of visas issued. Here’s the quota breakdown for 2024:

Country Quota (2024)

Australia – 45,000
Canada – 8,000
India – 3,000
New Zealand – 8,500
Republic of Korea – 5,000
Andorra – 100
Hong Kong – 1,000
Iceland – 1,000
Japan – 6,000
Monaco – 1,000
San Marino – 1,000
Taiwan – 1,000
Uruguay – 500

Countries like Australia rarely hit their cap, but others—such as India, Taiwan, and Hong Kong—use a lottery system due to high demand.

2. Age Requirements

Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old at the time of application. However, exceptions allow individuals from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Korea to apply until the age of 35.

Even if an applicant turns 31 (or 36) while in the UK, they may stay until the visa’s expiry date.

3. Financial Requirements

Applicants need to prove they can support themselves financially by demonstrating savings of at least £2,530. These funds must be:

  • Held in an accessible personal account (e.g., a bank account).
  • Available for at least 28 consecutive days before the application date.

Special Rules for Indian Nationals

Indian citizens must apply via the Indian Young Professionals Scheme, which operates differently from the standard Youth Mobility Visa. Key additional requirements include:

  • Invitation to Apply: Applicants must secure a spot through a periodic ballot system.
  • Education Level: A qualification at RQF Level 6 or higher, equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.
  • Police Clearance Certificate: A valid certificate issued within six months of the application.

Successful ballot entrants receive a unique application reference number, which is required for submission.

Visa Restrictions and Conditions

The Youth Mobility Visa comes with specific limitations:

  • Validity: The visa is typically valid for two years. Renewal is not possible for most nationalities, but citizens of Australia, Canada, and New Zealand can extend their stay for an additional year.
  • Employment: Most job types are allowed, except for professional sports or coaching roles. Self-employment is permitted under strict conditions:
    • No employees.
    • Limited equipment (valued under £5,000).
    • No fixed business premises.
  • Public Funds: Visa holders cannot access public funds during their stay.
  • Study: Studying is allowed, except for courses requiring an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance.
