Important Travel Update: eVisas and the Future of UK Immigration

The UK Home Office’s transition to a digital immigration system with eVisas marks a significant step forward. While eVisas offer numerous benefits, such as security, efficiency, and convenience, travellers need to be aware of important updates, particularly as they relate to travel arrangements.

What is an eVisa? Here is everything you need to know about what an eVisa is.

What Do eVisas Mean for Travel?

For most travellers, immigration status checks are now digital. When travelling:

  • Immigration status will be verified automatically via the View and Prove service or automated systems.
  • Airlines and carriers can contact the Home Office’s 24/7 support hub if required.

Temporary Measures for Expired BRPs and EUSS BRCs

To ensure no one is disadvantaged during this transition:

  • Airlines and carriers will accept expired BRPs or EUSS BRCs (expiring on or after 31 December 2024) as valid proof of permission to travel until 31 March 2025.
  • Travellers should carry their expired BRP/EUSS BRC with them in early 2025 for added reassurance.

Pro Tip:

Before travelling, create a View and Prove share code online. This code is valid for 90 days and can simplify proving your status.

Streamlined Updates for Travelers

One of the key advantages of eVisas is the ability to quickly and easily update your details.

  • Adding a new passport to your UKVI account is a straightforward process.
  • Most updates, such as contact details or name changes, take effect immediately—no need to send in physical documents.

Do Expired Documents Affect Immigration Status?

No. If your physical document, such as a BRP, expires, it does not impact your immigration status. Travelers can still:

  • Use expired BRPs for right-to-work and rent checks.
